- Tuesday July 20th has seen the release of FileMaker Go, a FileMaker database solution specifically designed for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
FileMaker Go makes it possible for users to host single FileMaker database solutions directly on their iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad or to connect to a FileMaker database solution hosted remotely via Wifi or 3G.
Users can to add, modify, or delete data; find, sort and navigate through records; open new windows; and switch between layouts. Many popular FileMaker Pro features are supported on FileMaker Go, including Tab controls, Quick Find, Web Viewers, External SQL Data Sources, containers, portals and even most scripts.
FileMaker Go does have its limitations. At the moment, most FileMaker Pro plugins don’t work with FileMaker Go. Custom Menus are not fully supported. It is also not currently possible to create new databases on the iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad or on a remote server with this App.
Filemaker Go is not meant to create database solutions on its own, but rather to access and update an existing database. You still need to create the database schema and design the layouts on the desktop application Filemaker Pro and then move them to your iPhone or iPad. You can load the databases by transferring them in iTunes, emailing them as an attachment to an account that is set up on your device, or by clicking a web link to download the file directly. If you run the database locally, you can transfer it back to your desktop computer via iTunes. Filemaker Go can also access a database over the network and thus makes a fantastic mobile client to a hosted, multi-user solution.
When connecting to a remotely hosted FileMaker Pro file, any changes made on the host appear almost immediately within FileMaker Go.
FileMaker Go works in both portrait and landscape views , automatically switching as necessary. It is also possible to determine if the user platform is an iPhone / iPod Touch or and iPad and display a particular layout accordingly.
FileMaker Go is ideally suited for database solutions such as time logging, cost recording, generating on the spot sales orders, inventory checks and checklists.
