- Why FileMaker? (Part 1)
- Why FileMaker? What is it? What can I achieve with FileMaker? Why should I use FileMaker over the likes the open source MYSQL or the massive ORACLE?
These are some of the questions that we will answer over the coming days.
WHAT IS FILEMAKER?
FileMaker is a cross-platform (works on Windows & Mac), relational database application from a company called, uniquely enough, FileMaker. It integrates a database engine with a GUI (graphical user interface) based interface, allowing users to create and modify database applications by dragging elements into layouts, screens or forms.
FileMaker is both the name of the Company and the name of it’s line of proprietary database software applications. There are a variety of FileMaker products available, catering to the needs of different sized businesses and organisations.
FileMaker was originally developed as a personal database application, much like Microsft’s Access, for the Macintosh market. With the inclusion of out-of-the-box business templates as well as the ingeniousness and resourcefulness of the first beta testers in finding new uses for the system, FileMaker has both spread to Windows and also grown into an extremely effective system for creating both back office systems as well as dynamic web sites, finally joining the ranks of MYSQL and ORACLE as a serious contender in the database market.
