- FileMaker Pro 11 - New Features (Cont.)
- More new and exciting features in FileMaker 11.
RECURRING IMPORTS:
This is the functional equivalent of ESS, using Excel/CSV/Tab files as a backend database. It means that a FileMaker database can be setup to pull data from Excel spreadsheets each time the database is opened. FileMaker creates a layout and script for you that can of course be modified. It is also possible to update the layout without re-launching the database. There is an “Update” button that will grab the latest data on the fly.
Imported data is read-only. This function makes it easy to create sales reports, track workflow and collaborate with others.
QUICK FIND:
In FileMaker 11, it is now possible to search for information just as you would in a web browser.
The “Quick Find” feature allows a user to search through all the fields in the database without constructing elaborate queries. The feature can be customised to exclude fields or even layouts to make searching faster. Although this feature becomes a little unreliable when dealing with large, complex data schemes, it is a feature that Filemaker Developers have been crying out for, for a long time. Another extremely helpful feature.
OBJECT BADGES:
In FileMaker 11, Object Badges are used to visually identify different properties in a layout with new colour-coded icons.
Although more of a minor enhancement, it is still surprising how much this simple feature can speed up the development time in FileMaker. It is not simple to identify fields that have tooltips, script triggers, are linked to Quick Find and have other different properties. It is also possible to distinguish between indexed fields from the same table and fields from related tables.
A handy little feature much welcomed by serious FileMaker Developers.
